One of the cats has swelling around her right eye. Looks a little like the not-burst-abscess that she had on the *other* side a month or two ago.

Dangit, kitty, we're going away again next Monday night! Why do you choose 'now' as a time to have medical issues??

--------

On the good side, Mom's doing pretty well - I talked to her on the phone this evening for, like 15 minutes! (Previous conversations had been ~5 min at most before she got breathless.) And Dad's home, and glad to be home.

Oct. 28th, 2009 @ 09:58 pm Quiet day at home.
I stayed home today with the vague cold-like sensation of having no energy at all.  (This, after coming home early from work yesterday, after having spent the morning making sure that whatever I worked on could be easily fixed/recovered if I did something appallingly stupid - which meant I mostly did sequence analysis and figure-building.)  I went back to bed for about an hour after dropping Huz off at the train station, and spent the remainder of the day largely hanging out at the computer.  I designed a few different itineraries to NZ and Australia to see what dates and order did to prices.  I watched Season Two Episode One of Dollhouse over on hulu, which was overall not bad TV but I made sure to visit Wikipedia afterwards to find out more of who exactly these people were.  And I played a fair amount of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, which, some 70+ battles in, continues to be extremely engaging.  Didn't play any Scribblenauts today, though I did last night.  I continue to find the lexicon impressive, though aspects of control are less intuitive than might be desired.  Also, there's a HUGE difference in difficulty between the Puzzle levels (e.g. Reunite the girl with her kitten on the roof) and the Action levels (Starite is shown, need to overcome various difficult and/or dangerous obstacles to acquire it) within the same relative set.

More energetic tonight than last night.  I cleaned the bathroom, at least partly, and swept the floor while getting an education on flavors of Linux.  Me, I like chocolate.  Does anyone make a chocolate-flavored Unix?

Yeah, but I bet he didn't produce pollen and nectar up the wazoo like the Easter lilies that were part of the humongous flower arrangement that was in church last night during choir rehearsal.  One person had to leave, they caused her such breathing problems.  (They didn't exactly help my already scratchy throat either!)

Kudos and thanks to our choir director for moving them out of the room and opening the windows - it definitely helped.  Now if the scratchy throat part would just go away, please?

I stayed home today, as I guessed yesterday I would.  I slept better than I had the previous night (the cold had largely moved from drippy to stuffy), but nowhere near enough to make up for the sleep I'd lost the night before.  After breakfast and Huz leaving for work, I went back to bed and slept for something over an hour.  It helped.  As did the Peach Pleasure with Immunity boost that I went and fetched myself at lunchtime.  I'm still not healthy, but I feel a great deal more alert than I did for most of yesterday evening.

I finished Phantom Hourglass.  Last boss battle is HARD, had to look up a second walkthrough to find out how to deal with his nasty spin attack.

I acquired a package of beef jerky at lunchtime too, figuring that something I could chew on without lots of calories might help my sinuses stay clear.  Don't know if it really helped, but it tasted nice.  However, I just noticed that the nice folks at Whole Foods probably paid someone to write the following jingle I found on the back of the package:

Sing this little song the next time you're "home on the range."
  Oh give me a snack
I can fit in my pack
Made with beef that's organically raised
It's seasoned just right that when you take a bite
By the flavor you will be amazed
  Our jerky's superb
Low in fat and with protein so high
That when hunger is strong just remember this song
Eat beef jerky - it'll satisfy

I can just about hear Garrison Keillor singing it as a parody on Prairie Home Companion.

Finally, I know I've been nattering way too much about Scribblenauts and how much I'm looking forward to it.  But I think I've found a demo of it that will appeal to this crowd.  You can write "Cthulu" and "God" and they fight!

Back to work tomorrow I expect.  Mooooooooore minipreps!

I has a cold.  It's wet and runny and kept me up a lot of last night.  I plan to leave work early today, and I hope that (1) it gets better soon - we have fun plans this weekend! - and (2) Huz doesn't catch it.  Achoo!

It has (happily) been a while since I had a severe migraine.  Had one last night, which stretched into today.  The huz drove us to work and I was able to get some work done on the research presentation that I'm supposed to give on Wednesday, but had to leave early due to owieness.

I'd forgotten that migraines sometimes come with nausea.  (last night; this part seems to be mostly gone)

I'd forgotten that the nerves affected by migraine go places other than forehead/temples.  They go fun places like into your upper and lower jaw, which is where the pain-center has been hanging out, off and on, for roughly half the day.

I'd forgotten that you really want to sleep A LOT when you have a migraine.  I went to bed around 9 last night.  Woke up a couple of times, but definitely slept 10+ hours.  Then I slept/dozed another two or so in various bits today.

I remember that I'm supposed to feel some better tomorrow, and some/mostly better the day after that.  I do wish I didn't have dress rehearsal for a chorus concert the next two nights!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled whatever.

I'm sick. Cold details.. )

Huz is coming home soon!  And he's buying me English muffins, which are (is?) one of my "I have a nasty cold" comfort foods.  He was well enough to go to work, but is leaving an hour earlier than usual, for which I do not blame him.

Meh.  I'll get better, I will.

Fluffy is also doing rather better.  He saw the vet Monday, who found he had a fever and that the upper part of his favored leg was warm - consistent with a puncture wound, but no wound found.  Wonder if he got a spider bite or something.  He's been on pain medicine since, and is starting to put some weight on that foot.  So yay Fluffy.

I could deal with the lack of internal thermostat.  I could deal with the sinus pain.  Even if my nose were really runny, I could deal with that.

But really, the occasional aspect of colds that really bites the big one is not being able to breathe through one's nose more than about 30% capacity - if you're really lucky.  Mine's too stuffed to breathe through much at all.

Which means sleep will be difficult at best.  Hope the decongestant decides to do something.

'Tweren't food poisoning; 'twere stomach flu, as was proven by the huz being ill late last night.  Fortunately, he seems to be feeling better already.  Still not fair that we managed to get sick during vacation not once, but twice.  Rrrrr.

Not. Fair.

TMI behind the cut )
The rest of vacation has actually been going quite pleasantly.  We've both unlocked the Star Cup in Kart; the huz has beaten it (and thus opened up the Special Cup) - I haven't, but I have Rosalina as a playable character now.  She's got a Luma that hangs out with her!  So cute!  And I unlocked the Leaf Cup.  Also we now both have the last sea chart in Phantom Hourglass now, so yay.  We've spent time reading, taking walks, going skating, and doing useful things more or less as we please, which has been splendid.  Any plans I originally had for today are mostly gone out the window and have changed to: Rest, and attempt to convince digestive system that it really is all okay.  Really.

..Huh.  And I'm feeling well enough to type, which is something I guess.  Back to bed sort of soon though.

You know it's hot outside (at only 11:15 AM, yet) when you step inside where the temperature is in the 78°-80°F range after running around outside doing errands and think, "Oh, that's pleasantly cool!"

Still sick.  But the huz is feeling distinctly better - this bodes well for how I'll be feeling come Monday.

We acquired a new suitcase!  My mom gave me a big ol' suitcase as a high school graduation gift that's held up pretty well through the years (all 17 of them, almost exactly).  It's still reasonably functional,  but the other zipper tab finally gave up the ghost a trip or two ago, and I haven't done anything about getting it fixed.  We were in Mervyn's earlier because the huz needed new shorts for the trip.  We went to the luggage section to see if we could find under-shirt pouches for passport, money, etc (success!), and the huz noticed that American Tourister luggage was all 50% off!  So we are now the proud owners of what would ordinarily be a $200+ big ol' suitcase with a heck of a lot more pockets and stuff than the old one had.   Does anyone know of an organization that would find our old suitcase useful?  We might just put it out on the sidewalk with a 'Free' sign on it; that's worked well in the past.

Have caught the huz's cold.  It's a slow-moving thing - he's been sickish since Sunday night and still isn't over it.  I caught it Tuesday night.  Presently it's uncomfy and 'yeah, I'm not healthy' but no worse than that.  But it's still annoying.

Hope we're both over it come Monday.  Spending 13 hours in transit on a plane with a cold sounds less than pleasant.

Meanwhile, a heads-up: On Monday, the huz and I are going to China for 2 weeks!  We'll be back Sunday July 6, arriving before we depart due to fun games with the international date line.  We expect to be mostly incommunicado during that time; neither of us has a cell phone that will work there, and we're not bringing a laptop.  We will bring the DS with Internet browser in the hopes of finding a wireless network we can use.  Opera for DS is a slow and clunky thing; if I'm able to post at all, it will probably be along the lines of "We're here, we're tired, it's really cool," and I won't be keeping up with reading my friends list.  If there's something I really need to know, it's probably best to email me instead.  I'll post the flights and our hotels later tonight.

Last night (after having run out of thinkiness), I was looking for the laser pointer, with which I'd been torturing the cats earlier.  (They like it.  Really, they do.  They wanted more, hence my looking for it.)

After a minor search, I didn't see it in any of its usual places, at which point I declared that the object in question "was displaying a certain lack of findability."

There's gotta be a use for that in some HR-generated office-speak document somewhere, right?

---------

In other news: Having woken up with a scratchy/sore throat that has not gone away over the course of the day, I probably have the cold that's been going around.  I'm not sorry to be getting it over with now, as I can be a single absent soprano out of many for the performance of Carmina Burana that Symphonic Chorus is doing this weekend.  However, it would be spectacularly bad if I were to miss either the recital (of all my voice teacher's students, including me) or the big church Evensong thing that we're doing, both of which happen on Saturday May 10.  Definitely better to get it over with now!

Meantime, here are some alterative lyrics to 'O Fortuna', for the many of you who are familiar with the original Latin.  It's more a son et lumiere of  mis-hearing the original lyrics, rather than making up totally new ones.

Well, I did make it through the first half of choir rehearsal.  (Mostly.)  And I did have the intelligence to realize that trying to sing further would be just plain stupid because I was already in the process of losing my voice, and didn't care to repeat Sunday's episode.

Hrmph.  Wanna be all better.

It came!  All nice and as advertised and appears to work fine.  Yay!

Still not totally healthy.  I've been going to work this week, and generally crashing around 4, 4:30 (at which point, body says 'lie down or else!').  I did go to choir rehearsal last night, and after some initial gunk-on-cords, was able to make high loud noises as required.  Happily rehearsal let out early - I really didn't have much left after an hour and a half!

And today, I got home a bit past five, made sure new game worked, left feedback for seller, lay down for half an hour, and practiced for about half an hour, at which point I was totally wiped again.  Oh well.  One of these fine days I'll be totally healthy again, I swear it.

Yesterday evening was having lots of histamine action going on: sneezing, runny nose, runny eyes, etc.  Decided based on that (and the night before when I hadn't slept much) that it was time for NyQuil.  And it worked!  I slept quite soundly from ~11 when we went to bed (me in the living room as usual when one of us is sick) till 8:30 when the huz got up to get breakfast and get ready to go to skating class.

I'm still sleepy and muzzy from the drugs, but I'm more than willing to put up with that.  All it means, really, is that if I want to go back to bed and doze some more, it's fine, and it's more likely that I'll actually get some doze/sleep.  Which can't be bad with this thing I have.  :)  I expect to continue being drug-muzzy till 1 or 2 this afternoon; that's what happened the last time I took this stuff.

Stash peppermint tea with honey is also a good thing.  Feels nice.  When I woke up this morning I sounded distinctly frog-like, rather like the huz did about this time last weekend.  Choir director and voice teacher have been advised that I may not be up for singing in the next couple of days.

I do hope I'll manage to get into street clothes and go for a walk sometime this afternoon.  As it's been for the last couple of days, it's bright and sunny and is probably pretty warm out.
